Mt Barney Summit Walk
$155.00
Mt Barney, the Everest of South East Queensland!
Mt Barney is located120km south-west of Brisbane via the Mt Lindesay Highway. Along with Mt Maroon, Mt May, Mt Lindesay, Mt Ernest, Mt Ballow and Mt Clunie it makes up Mount Barney National Park. These rugged peaks are the remains of the ancient Focal Peak Shield Volcano which erupted 24 million years ago.
Barney is the second highest peak in south-east Queensland and rises above the surrounding landscape in this wild, beautiful, World Heritage-listed park which is home to many rare animals, plant species and communities. Much of the country is open eucalypt forest, with some beautiful grassy slopes and lower country bearing tall, spreading eucalypts.
Creeks with cascades, deep pools and shallow sections flow through the park, and are lined with river she-oaks , red-flowering bottlebrushes , golden silky oaks and patches of rainforest. Rarely-seen platypus swim in the lower reaches of the creeks and nest in their banks, kingfishers swoop over the water, and colourful honeyeaters and robins can be spied nearby.
Higher rocky slopes and depressions support patches of montane heath, some of which have spectacular wildflower displays in spring. Steep, rocky slopes are the habitat of brush-tailed rock-wallabies, which are listed as vulnerable to extinction.
