New South Wales (NSW) is the most populated state in Australia, but even then, there's an awful lot of nothing out west. The highway system is adequate, (although the Hume Highway between Sydney and Melbourne and the Pacific Highway between Sydney and Brisbane are both dual carriageway almost the whole way) but most other highways are two-lane strips of tar in varying condition.
